One rule hangs over our bench above all the others: quote the roof for what the roof actually needs. If the plain cap will serve the house as well as the fancy one, the plain cap is what goes on the paper. A workshop earns its tomorrow by being asked back, not by padding today's bill.

Is old brick worth saving?
Nearly always. Brick that has stood since the streetcar days is usually harder and better fired than what you can buy today. What fails is the mortar around it and the crown above it, and both can be renewed at the bench for far less than tearing a chimney down. We would rather restore a stack than replace it, and we will tell you honestly when it is past that point.
Do you work on chimneys from the early 1900s?
We do, and we like them. The old farmhouse and storefront stacks around Arvada were laid with softer lime-rich mortar, and they want repairs made the same way. Hard modern mortar smeared into old joints does more harm than good. We match the mix and the joint style to what the wall was built with, the old way when it is the better way.
Why does mortar matter more than brick in chimney repair?
Because mortar is the part that is designed to wear. The joints take the weather, the movement and the freeze, and they give up slowly so the brick does not have to. Once joints go soft or hollow, water walks straight into the wall and winter does the rest. Raking out and repointing tired joints is the single best money you can spend on old masonry.
How do I know when my chimney needs sweeping?
The chimney will tell you if you listen. A fire that sulks and smokes, a bitter smell on damp days, black flakes in the firebox, or a fine crust you can scratch inside the flue: any of those means the soot and creosote have built up far enough. A working fireplace should get looked at every year regardless, because creosote burns, and a flue fire is not a thing you want to meet.
What happens during the free chimney inspection?
One of the crew climbs up top and looks the stack over, cap to flashing, then checks the flue, the damper and the firebox from below, with a camera where eyes cannot reach. You get a plain accounting of what we found: what needs doing now, what can wait a season, and what is simply fine. There is no charge for the look and no obligation attached to it.
Will you tell me if my chimney does not need work?
Gladly, and it happens more often than you might think. A trade lives on its name, and ours is over the door. If the flue is clean and the joints are sound, we say so, shake hands and leave. When you do need us, the quote is written down before a tool comes off the truck, and the written number is the number.
Can a fireplace be modernized without losing its character?
Yes, and it is some of our favorite work. A gas insert can sit inside an original surround, a new liner can hide entirely inside the old stack, and a rebuilt firebox can be laid to match the brick around it. The room keeps its face, the fire gets easier to live with, and nothing worth keeping gets torn out.
